Project to mine waste at Dadu Majra launched

Punjab Governor and UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore on Friday inaugurated the “Mining of Legacy Waste and Recovery of Land” project at the Dadu Majra dumping ground here today. The project will be executed on build-operate-transfer basis.

Addressing the gathering, the Administrator congratulated the city residents, especially the residents of Dadu Majra, as the project will provide a big relief to them residents from the foul smell and leachate from the garbage dump, the major cause of spreading of various diseases.

He said under the project, around 5 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of waste lying at the dumping ground for over 20 years will be bio-mined and processed through scientific procedures. The entire land, about 25 acres, would be reclaimed for future use of scientific waste treatment and disposal of waste.

MP Kirron Kher appreciated the efforts of Mayor Rajesh Kumar for relentlessly highlighting problems due to dumping site.

The Mayor said today, a dream came true. He said he started agitations against the dumping site at young age. “Today is the biggest day for the residents of Dadu Majra and me,” he said.
