New Delhi June `10th

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said that the LG Anil Baijal’s decision to overrule the Delhi government’s order reserving state-run and private hospitals for Delhiites will be “implemented in letter and spirit”. “LG’s directives will be implemented in letter and spirit, this is not the time for disagreements or arguments,” Kejriwal said while addressing the media.

On Tuesday, the lieutenant governor had refused to reconsider his decision to overrule the Delhi government’s order reserving state-run and private hospitals for Delhiites. Reacting sharply, the LG office also said rather than discriminating among patients, the goal of the government should be to plan and prepare for adequate infrastructure. Kejriwal also said the data showed that number of COVID-19 cases in the national capital will rise sharply in the coming days, adding that 80,000 hospitals beds will be needed by July 31.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had yesterday warned that the number of COVID-19 cases in Delhi will explode to 5.5 lakhs by the end of July even though the Centre said there is no community transmission in the capital.  With such a surge in numbers, Delhi will need 80,000 beds by July end, he told reporters after a meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) chaired by Lt Governor Anil Baijal.

Delhi government hospitals and private facilities have been directed to prominently display information about the availability of beds on a flex board at their main gates. It came in the wake of several families, whose members may have been positive or suspected cases of COVID-19, alleging that they were turned away by various hospitals despite beds being available.

COVID-19 cases in the national capital breached the 31,000 mark on Tuesday with 1,366 fresh cases, while the death toll mounted to 905. The latest health bulletin issued by the Delhi government on Wednesday said there are 18,543 active cases, while 11,861 patients have either recovered, been discharged or migrated.

Kejriwal also shared the news of him testing positive for COVID-19. “My COVID-19 test result has come negative. I thank everyone for their good wishes and blessings,” he said.
